Description:
More mole than man, Hans is relatively tall for his species, standing at a full 52 inches in height when not burrowing underground. Like all those of his kind, his pink human-like skin is wrinkled, his yellowed incisors protrude, and he is covered with a light brown dusting of fur. His eyes are too small for his head but deceptively keen; as an underground dweller, he is able to see in the dark. Hans is clothed in ivory-white leather armour and relies on a short sword for personal defence - that is, if an enemy is able to get close enough to taste his blade. He carries a sling and a not inconsiderable collection of bullets which normally find their way into the eyes and teeth of aggessors before the use of a melee weapon becomes necessary.
He is the proud owner of a small earthenware jar of skin moisturiser.

Background:
Hans and his troop are obsessed with moisturiser: gathering ingredients to manufacture it, making it, possessing it, and applying it to their sensitive roseate skin. The catalyst for this preoccupation was the discovery decades ago of a dead human traveller in their region whose bags contained several ancient yet improbably still-usable jars of a delightfully floral-scented white cream which the moleman dubbed 'Nive-A'. Miraculously, the ivory lotion provided relief to their chronically sunburnt epidermis, and was reckoned to be a divine gift for its power to liberate them from their warrens during daylight hours. Despite their subsequent best efforts, the molemen and the Church of Iithius (lesser goddes of flowering plants and herbs), which took root and blossomed after the discovery, have been unable to reproduce faithfully the original holy moisturiser and its alluring fragrance.
As an acolyte of the Church of Iithius (motto: Be a New Flower Today!), he has been charged with a quest by his elders to venture into the unknown and return with samples of foreign flora for study and research into perfecting moleman Nive-A. Despite the young man's raw inexperience, the curate conferred this solo mission upon Hans because, during his ecclesiastical preliminaries, he displayed sagacity, furtiveness, and extraordinary skill in applying cream evenly. |
