Description and Background
Description:
A contemporary human from our world, who happened to see Bazil, might describe him as looking like a psychotic garden gnome. A native of Oerth, might describe him thus:
A gnome of the Forest sub-type, dressed typically for one of his kind, though soiled by dirt, food and wine. His beard is tangled and unkempt. His eyes are wide, dark and crazed. Barely restrained aggression seems to boil in their depths. His mouth is wide and grotesque- when he smiles one can see rows of small, vicious, piranha-like teeth- perhaps the only obvious sign of his Xvartish ancestry. He has trouble sitting still for long and is given to periodic bursts of manic giggling and the habitual licking of lips.
Background:
Born to the Blackbriar clan, in the depths of the Vesve Forest, Bazil is the unfortunate issue of a forest gnome lass who was raped by a pack of roving Xvarts. Bazils mother chose to raise the boy to adulthood and bring him up in the ways of the clan, loving him as she would any other child.
But despite his mothers care and attention, it soon became evident that there was just something "wrong" with the boy. Unlike most gnomes, he had a ravenous appetite for meat. His humor and pranks had a cruel, sinister bent. He preferred the company of weasels and stoats to the company of children his own age, whom he often frightened. He was unusually aggressive and given to starting brawls, sometimes doing serious injury to his victims.
His uncle, a priest of Flandal Steelskin, thought to channel his aggression into more constructive pursuits, by training him as a warrior. Bazil took to the training readily, but his skill with dart and blade only made his clansfolk more fearful of him. Realizing that he would never fit in with his own kind, Bazil decided to strike out on his own and seek a life of adventure, perhaps the only profession that would allow him to utilize his favorite hobby; chopping things to bits with a sword. |
