Hailing from the Lortmil Mountain region of the Principality of Ulek, Brufrig Granitesunder was training as an apprentice blacksmith when he had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of one Yuraebena Opalriver, the most beautiful example of dwarven femininity he had ever laid eyes on. With eyes that sparkled like emeralds, and a beard the color of hammered copper, she was gorgeous. She was there to pick up her father's armor, and while Brufrig did not actually have a hand in caring for it, he was happy to spend time talking with her as she paid for the work that the Master Smith had done. He must have made an impression, as she told him to meet her at a tavern the next day, and they could lunch together. Brufrig was so happy, he couldn't really concentrate the rest of the day or the next morning, and his handiwork, while normally not very good under the best of circumstances, managed to earn him several more swats on the ear than were customary. He didn't care. He was smitten, a dwarf in love.
When he arrived at the lunch destination at the appointed time, he found Yuraebena already there, waiting for him. She smiled at seeing the quite strong, but not so handsome, dwarf. They ate, they drank, they got to know each other a bit better, and plans were made to see each other again three nights hence. They had a number of occasions where they stepped out together over the next few months, until one day Yuraebena missed a lunch date. When she failed to show for their dinner date the next night, he began to grow concerned. The next day, he went to her father's shop. Surely, if she has been sick that would explain things. Maybe someone there could fill him in. Arriving at Opalriver Jewels and Precious Metals, the guards would not let him into the store. He asked if Yuraebena were perhaps ill, or if she was there could he please speak with her. One guard laughed at him, while the other went inside, appearing a few moments later with her father, Dussuki Opalriver.
