Specifically, following his mid-speech teleportation onto a Reclamist Academy officials' public-address rostrum. Academy officials, noting that his parents did not have the means to fund his education opted to seek sponsorship to cover schooling costs. Within weeks and following a battery of tests used to categorize the emerging skillsets of young MES sufferers, a sponsor came forward. Unified Systems Protective Services (USPS) issued a 'pending-employment' contract for Val's psychic training. In return, Val was contracted to USPS for a minimum of ten years. It was at the tail end of his service period that Val, then employed as a mind-guard, embarked to Kakimedes. The trip was prompted by the rioting that had engulfed the planet following Senator Clay Michaels' assassination. The 'official' under Val's purview being a lowly corporate bureaucrat with no real reason to brave a civil war. Naively fulfilling an entry-point request to disclose MES sufferers among disembarking staff, Val and several other USPS personnel found themselves promptly rounded up by armed planetary guards. A 'clerical' error of extraordinary incompetence. Disavowed by their employer, under lock and key on a hostile world, Val remains. Waiting out his days in a stupor-induced coma of fog brought on by a suite of MES blockers injected twelve times a day.
