Background:
Celestial Loss Preventer
Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia, LP, is an unassuming law firm buried not far from the center of Mejo's old business district. Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia has a number of well-known clients and annual growth commensurate with a small firm that specializes in contract law on the sector's greatest trading hub. Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia is rarely a law student's first choice. Frankly, it is unlikely to ever even cross an ambitious paralegal's mind. Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia, is, to put it kindly, not the sort of place it is difficult to get a job with.
Except for when it is.
Following a twelve year cycle on an obscure calendar, representatives of Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia hold a very peculiar examination in an undisclosed location. Candidates write an eight-part essay that is equal parts literary prose, legal analysis, and philosophical exegesis in a language that has been dead for a millennium. Few know the examination exists. Even fewer pass.
Wei Xuan (é玄) is one of the strange few to pass the examination and become a paralegal for Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia's Office of Celestial Loss Prevention. Following a period of intensive training, he was sent into the sector to provide pro bono legal services... and to fulfill stranger duties as well.
The Wei family toiled for three generations in the fields of Daiphon just to buy one-way passage to Mejo and many more years were spent acquiring any bit of esoteric lore that might one day allow a member of the family to pass the exam. Although his parents and brother all passed on before his training at Armitage, Ghosh, and Xia was complete, his sister, Wei Xiao (é晓), still lives on Daiphon. |
