Lionel grew up in Fayetteville, AR. As a child he attended a haunted house put on by the local Lions Club. When he was finished, he mentioned how much he really liked the headless ghost in the kitchen. The haunted house worker looked at him, confused. 'There's no headless ghost, kid. Whadda ya talkin' about?' Unsure of what exactly he saw, he apologized to the worker, chalking it up to excitement and an excessive amount of Mountain Dew, letting the memory slip from his mind.
As he got older, he began to excel at football, eventually earning a full-ride scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. A fierce defender with a knack for making big hits, he earned Second-Team All-Rookie national honors his first season. Early in his second season, his mother was killed in a car accident. Back home to attend the funeral, he saw his 'mother' rise from the closed coffin and walk through the church, meeting up with his deceased father. She blew Lionel a kiss and waved goodbye, before walking through the doors of the church. Creating a disturbance, only to discover that nobody else, including his brother and sister, had seen them, Lionel could not take any more. Remembering his previous encounter with a supernatural being, he wondered how many others have had similar things happen to them. Driving back to Norman, he locked himself in his dorm room, refusing to leave or talk to anyone for two weeks. During this time, he surfed the internet obsessively, looking for reported ghost sightings (and watching hour upon hour of cat videos), only to discover that most reported sightings are not nearly as friendly as those he had encountered. He also discovered Ghostbusters University.
Applying online to the University, he was accepted, then told his coach he was quitting football. The coach laughed when he found out what it was that Lionel was going to do, telling him he was throwing away millions of dollars and any hope of a professional football career.
